Lucky Enough To Still Have A Home And Pool?

As our neighbors return to homes that are still standing, there are a number of pool issues to consider following the Eaton Fire.

When fire destroys homes and businesses swimming pools in the area are going to be affected. The abundance of smoke and ash, damage to structures and equipment, and the possibility of promoting mosquito breeding standing water are issues that will need to be addressed. Once local Pasadena and Altadena officials have seen to clearing the area and allow re-population, the following steps should be taken to assure your pool is safe and non-toxic:

Pool Water

  • Clean the skimmer basket and skim the surface of the water to remove ash and soot.
  • Vacuum the bottom of the pool after brushing the sides and bottom of the pool.
  • Backwash and clean the filters.
  • Confirm that the pH level of the pool water is correct (7.2 - 8.0).
  • Check the free chlorine level and adjust to a minimum level of 2.0 PPM for pools and 3.0 PPM for hot tubs or spas.
  • Check that the re-circulation system is working properly
  • Wait until the pool water is within the proper pH and chlorine levels to allow your family to swim in the pool.

Due to the high volume of smoke and ash we have experience the past few weeks, these steps may have to be repeated following the cleaning of the filters. As a licensed pool maintenance company, Pasadena Pool Cleaning and Repairs will be happy to take these steps with your pool.

Deck Cleaning

  • Sweep the pool deck into a container or trash bags rather than spraying the deck with water. This will prevent the toxic chemicals and debris from running into the pool or down storm drains.
  • Lightly wet the soot, ash, and debris to keep it from flying into the air as you clean.
  • Use a broom for sweeping and a mop and bucket for deep cleaning.

Pool Draining

  • We do not recommend that you fully drain your pool.
  • If you need to drain the pool, contact the local authorities to learn the best practices.
  • Also reduce the chlorine levels to 0.0 PPM and a pH level between 7.2 and 8.0 before disposing of the water.

Mosquito Breeding

Abandoned pools and spas can lead to the kind of stagnant water that promotes mosquito breeding. Diseases such as West Nile virus have been found in the Los Angeles area in the past.

  • Your pool does not necessarily need to be drained to keep from making a mosquito breeding area.
  • You can employ a mosquito "dunk," which is a solid doughnut shaped item with is made to kill mosquito larvae.
  • If you eliminate water chemicals including chlorine, you can introduce mosquito fish to your un-maintained pool. These fish are roughly the size of minnows.
